diy: cereal box mini pinata

My sister turned 30 last week, and if you follow me on instagram you know that I got creative with her gift packaging and put together a mini pinata full of fun little gifts.

Here's a {very!} quick run-through of how I made it.

I raided the recycling bin for a Cheerios box...then I sketched out a 3 and 0 on the front and back of the box and cut them out.

I also cut long strips 1.5" wide for the sides and then, taping them on as I went around, attached the front and back of the 3 and 0 until I formed 3D numbers.

Next I cut 2-3 inch strips of tissue paper, folding each in half, and then snipping with fringe scissors all the way down.  The wider the strips, the longer the fringe will be...all the little extra fringe pieces make the perfect confetti!

And then...the time consuming part {seriously...this took me forever}...start gluing the fringe strips.  I started by covering the edges and then worked my way in to the front and back.

After I finally finished gluing fringe, I used an Xacto knife to cut a door in each number so I could stuff them full of treats.

Finally, I hot glued a piece of twine to the top of each number just in case she wanted to hang them {but she better not break them after all that work! ;)}...and glued on a little message while I was at it, too.

Happy birthday, Lauren!

diy gift: painted wooden boxes

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Sharpie, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia  #StaplesBTS http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

These lovely painted boxes have been on my to do list for a while...

Making them and filling them with brand new, fresh Sharpies to gift to our tutors is the just the right way to start the school year.

And boxes filled Sharpies are always better than pencils!! :)

If you've been reading for a while {or follow me on instagram!}, you know my love of Sharpies as grown up coloring supplies...and every once in a while I even let my littles use them...so it makes sense that I like to gift them too.

Painting the wooden boxes can be as simple or complex a design as you like...just mask off and paint.

I really liked the original tutorial's starburst design, so I went with that.

And then got all crazy and tried a herringbone pattern.
I like the starburst best. :)

I didn't prime/prep the wooden boxes at all before painting them, so I ended up with 3-4 coats of paint.

And if you're wondering about colors...

"pea shoot" {green}
"summer linen" {ivory}
"camellia pink"
"wild blueberry" {navy}
"sterling" {silver}
"wild salmon" {peach}

...all by Martha Stewart Crafts

"Jamaican Sea" {aqua...left over from this painting project}

...by Folk Art

{wooden boxes can be found at Dick Blick or on Amazon}

Peeling the masking tape off and revealing the final look is so satisfying!!

Filling them with fresh Sharpies is pretty satisfying, too!

I bought my Sharpies at Staples, and now through August 24th, all Sharpie fine, ultra fine, and neon packs are on sale.  Score!  {While supplies last...of course ;)}

diy: rainbow circle punch garland

This is a super simple project I actually started in my last days of being pregnant hoping to keep myself busy...

and now that I see how happy and fun it looks I'm kicking myself for not finishing sooner!

All you need is a circle punch {I used Martha's!}, colored copy paper, and a sewing machine...

and a little patience to unfold.

I arranged stacks of six circles each and then {continuously} ran each through my sewing machine.

I have it hanging in the boys' room right now...but I'm thinking a longer version would look cute on the Christmas tree??

movie night treats: chocolate & sprinkle dipped mini peeps

Pretty much anything in miniature is awesome.
And pretty much anything dipped in chocolate and covered in sprinkles is awesome.
So mini peeps dipped in chocolate and sprinkles made for a super cute treat for our movie night this weekend.

This is one of the least original ideas ever...I like it anyway. ;)

Just melt chocolate, dip the peeps in, and roll 'em around in sprinkles.
So easy a sleep-deprived mama holding a newborn can do it.

I have a serious love of packaging things in berry baskets.

Mini flags with a mini clothespin on top of mini peeps.
Too much?
Haha.

All ready to bring to our backyard movie night date.
