diy: Christmas card photo backdrop

This post sponsored by OshKosh B'gosh.  All opinions are my own.  As always, thanks for reading! xoxo

Last week I shared the outfits I picked out for my littles to wear for our Christmas card picture {and some tips for getting them to cooperate!}.

Today I'll share the simple and festive backdrop I put together for them.

I pulled together props mainly from things we already had on hand.

One of our vintage red chairs and a tiny faux Christmas tree wrapped in a paper bag.

A simple string of white lights.

And a merry and bright banner I made with my cutting machine.

For another idea for a simple diy photo backdrop, here is the paper fan one I made over the summer and if you want to fancy up your banner, here is the one I made for Sister's birthday party.  Change the colors to reds and greens, and you're set!

The boys couldn't stand a tree without lights. ;)

And now for a little love from OshKosh B'gosh...

Snap the perfect family photos with comfortable pieces your kids will love to wear every day!

simple nest place cards

Remember last month when JoAnn put out the blogger challenge for spooky spaces?
Well, November's challenge is {fittingly!} turkey tablescapes.

Lucky for me, my parents always host Thanksgiving dinner.
{Trust me...I'm thankful for that every year!!}

So that means I got to just have a little fun with colors and sparkles for this challenge...
but I also think these would make for fun gift tags/toppers, too...for any birthday or holiday!

I found the sparkly bird nests in the floral section of JoAnn.  {Turkeys lay eggs...so it makes sense, right?? :)}

They had picks attached to the bottoms, but I was able to just wiggle them out.

Then I just ruffled strips of tissue paper on my sewing machine and attached the ruffles to tiny tags.

I wrote the guest names on small pieces of paper I trimmed into a flag shape and then glued those atop the ruffled tags.

I tucked the tags into the nests, and there you go!

If you're looking for more inspiration, search the hashtag #turkeytablescapes or check out the JoAnn craft catalog.

And if you're ready to shop...here's a coupon good for the month of November!

Thanksgiving hostess & teacher gifts

Tracking PixelThis post sponsored by PAM Cooking Spray.  All opinions are my own.  As always, thanks for reading! xoxo

My littles are off school all of next week for Thanksgiving break, which of course I totally forgot, so today was my last chance to deliver a little gift for our teachers.
We're very thankful for good teachers!

Last night I went on a baking spree and made a few loaves of bread to gift.
Luckily, they all turned out just right and I had them wrapped up and ready to go in time for school.
{Great banana bread recipe found here.}

If you follow me on instagram, you saw a peek at my bread packaging last weekend when I brought it to a friend as a hostess gift.
The process was really simple for something I think turned out to be fun and festive.

To make the pom pom flowers, all I did was take yarn poms that I made and hot glued twigs to them.

I wrapped the loaf in wax paper, tied it with baker's twine and a tag, and tucked the flowers into the twine.

Now of course this isn't the first time I've procrastinated on gifts or projects.
I've kinda been that way my whole life...two of our littles were over a day old before they had names...
But the thing about pushing things to the last minute is that there's really not a whole lot of room for error...
I've had plenty of baking/food prep mishaps that have led to a stop in the grocery store for replacements before a party or just scrapping recipes all together.

Remember Sister's birthday cake??
The tin can rainbow cake that didn't go quite as planned?
So frustrating.

A big help for me to avoid these moments is a little bit of patience and doing things right.
When I'm baking, I always make sure that I have all the right ingredients on hand {duh! but I forget all the time!}, that I've properly prepared my pans {Baking PAM Cooking Spray definitely helps with that!}, and that I don't cut corners in the recipe.
It makes such a difference!  Nothing's worse than making something complex, baking it, waiting for it to cool...just for it to fall apart. {Ahem. See above.}
And...especially true for this time of year...every minute I spend swearing at a failed recipe or starting the whole thing over is a minute that I'm spending away from my family and the other fun things going on.
Getting things right the first time always feels so good!

Another big help for me is using baking mixes when I'm in a pinch...there's no shame in that!
Boxed brownie mix and quick bread mix from the store is just easier than making something from scratch so many times...
Again, more time with my family.  And who really minds??
Even if it's a mix, I made it at home...so still counts as homemade in my book! :)

And now...the best part!!

that time of year: Christmas card picture prep

This post sponsored by OshKosh B'gosh.  All opinions are my own.  Thanks for reading! xoxo

Christmas card pictures are like bedtime to me.

Stick with me here.

It has to be done.
I look forward to it. {some days more than others!}
The end result is great.
But the process...
it can be painful at times.

Bedtime around here goes one of two ways:
Everyone is exhausted, brushes their teeth, listens to a story, snuggles in, and drifts peacefully off to sleep.
Or b.) I feel like I'm herding cats for 45 minutes.

Christmas card pictures seem to follow the same pattern.
My littles are all into it, they smile, they laugh, they look like they actually like each other and we're done lickety split.
Or...I end up with a bunch of awkward smiles, blurred, moving bodies, and screaming babies. {Although I'll confess I love crying baby pictures!}

This year {thanks to the kick in the pants and a partnership with OshKosh B'gosh}, I'm planning, I'm starting early, and I'm going to be ready to get a good {but I'll settle for decent! Ha!} Christmas card pic.

So I started today by putting together outfits for them.
{I know people have entire pinterest boards dedicated to outfit combos for family photos...that's too much for me.  I just pick what I like.  So there pinterest!}
Of course I want outfits that will look good on camera and that are festive, but over the years I've realized that family photos in comfortable pieces that my littles will actually love to wear every day...those are the smarter choices.
They're happier.  They're more relaxed.  And I'm happy that I bought something that they can wear beyond a few occasions in December!

If you're interested in my outfit choices:
     button front plaid shirts for the boys, mock neck sweaters for the boys, paired with jeans
     long sleeve striped jersey dress for sister, paired with grey leggings

All items c/o OshKosh B'gosh.

A few other things I've learned over the years about prepping for pictures:
     Make sure everyone is well rested and has a full tummy.
     Make them laugh.  Giggling pictures are always more fun and natural than weird, posed little kid smiles.
     Bribes.  It's probably against every parenting book rule, but hey, it works.  I am not above a treat/a toy/a      trip to McDonald's for a little extra motivation to cooperate.

As the next portion of my partnership, I'm going to be putting together some photo backdrops and props that will {hopefully!} make for some fun photos.  Look for that next week!

And now for a little love {and a $50 giftcard giveaway!} from OshKosh B'gosh...

Create picture perfect looks for your family photos with OshKosh B’gosh's adorable skirts, cable-knit vests, sweaters, and dresses as well as baby winter clothes and kids' winter clothes!

for the girls...
...embellished tees are perfect for playtime and all-day wear.  Sequins, bling, and bows make tees super stylish!
...darling dresses are soft and easy-to wear...and pair them with a cardigan to keep cozy!
...it's easy to dress up outfits with sparkly ballet flats with comfy tights.
...OshKosh B’gosh has a collection of bangles, ribbon necklaces and headbands galore.

and for the boys...
...button-front plaid shirts are perfect paired with corduroys, khakis or jeans for an easy outfit.
...the combo of fleece-lined jeans and a denim shirt is always so handsome!
...and {of course!} a cable knit sweater vest is perfect for dressing up holiday outfits.

diy: colorful party poppers

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Cottonelle, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #CottonelleTarget  http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO.

I always love a good crafty challenge, and finding a way to make something as ordinary as toilet paper into something pretty for a party was one I was totally up for.

Turns out it was easier than I thought...and I made the cardboard rolls into fun and colorful party poppers. {Based loosely on the July 4th rocket favors from Martha.}

To doll up your cardboard rolls into favors, you'll need:

empty toilet paper rolls
patterned paper {scrapbook, wrapping, or something you doodled yourself!}
twine
glue gun or double sided tape
tissue paper or crepe paper sheets
tape
surprises to go inside
confetti or tissue paper filler {optional}

Start by cutting a strip of paper wide enough to wrap around the roll. {approx. 4 1/4" x 6"}

Hot glue each end of the strip around the roll.

Then take a piece of tissue or crepe paper {appox. 6" x 12"} and fill it with treats.

Tightly wrap the paper around the treats going inside the popper and secure it with a piece of tape.

Tie off each end with a piece of twine and slide it inside the cardboard roll.

Leave a popper on each guest's place setting or have a basket full for them to choose from themselves! Ready to head to Target for a package of Cottonelle? Click here for a coupon {while supplies last!} and for a limited time, you can get a free box of Kleenex with the purchase of Cottonelle Triple Roll 12 pack or larger!
