what I made {for the teachers} Friday

In one of my many cruises around the internet I came across a blogger/pinner/instagrammer/I can't remember which... who makes some sort of treat for her littles' teachers each week.

I love any excuse to make extra desserts, so I thought I'd start doing the same.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep it up every Friday, but I'm going to try!

So week one...donuts.
Just like I made last week, dipped in glaze.

I hope they liked them as much as I liked snacking on the leftovers. ;)

diy: pom pom word banner

I came up with this idea way back when I had my pom collection out to make our party hat cupcake toppers.

It's just as easy as it looks...cut out letters from cardboard...hot glue poms...glue letters to twine...done.

And I'll confess I still haven't decided if I actually like it.
Maybe it was better just an idea in my head...

Is it just me or is there a tiny bit of scary clown nose vibe to the poms??
No?
Just me?
Haha.
Okay.
I'll stop now. ;)

Have a good day, friends.

beginner bento lunches

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group®, Rubbermaid, Jif, and Smucker’s, but all my opinions are my own. #aBetterLunch #pmedia http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO  As always, thanks for reading!

As you probably already know, my 6 year old started first grade last week.
Full days of school.
He's thrilled.
I'm curled up in the fetal position.

An alone trip to Target...school supplies and lunch supplies.

Such is the life of mamas.

Eyeball candies from Target, too!

One thing that I can almost look forward to {aside from picking him up every afternoon!} is sending him with a fun bento lunch I made each day.

I smile when I catch him sneaking a peek into his lunchbox on the way to school so he can see what combination I put together.

And even though I am a beginner with packing school lunches, we've managed to play with our food plenty....again and again and again and again.
So I've had some practice. ;)

My husband is also a little weird about food touching on his plate, so I've been separating things for years!

The two things I try to remember when I'm making school lunches is to keep them {relatively!} simple and keep them {relatively!} healthy.
There are some super elaborate bento lunches out there...just spend a few minutes on pinterest and you'll be in awe!

My oldest has always been on the picky side of eating, so we stick to classics like pb&j and fruits/veggies.

I use Rubbermaid Lunchblox boxes {found at Target}, divided by silicone cupcake cups {found at a craft store...word on instagram is that they're also available at the $1 store}.

I use the tiny animal picks/forks for function, but also as cute decoration! :)
I found these at a local Asian market, but rumor has it they're also available on Amazon.
{The egg shaper/molds a few photos up are also from the same store...but I've never tried them!}

I use tiny cookie cutters and fondant cutters {abc set from above pic, too!} to make shapes and spell words from cheese and fruit leather.
I've had good luck finding those at craft and fabric stores.

And if you're looking for a little bento inspiration to get started, here you go!

cucumbers, apples, blueberries, goldfish, tomatoes, pb&j topped with fruit leather

strawberries, grapes, cookies, pretzels, sugar snap peas, turkey dog

multi-grain crackers, cheese, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes, blueberries, sugar snap peas

cantaloupe, grapes, pretzel goldfish, chocolate chip cookies, cucumbers, pb&j

strawberries, cookies, apples, grapes, cheese, multi-grain crackers

raspberries, baby carrots, s'more trail mix, pretzels, raisins, pb&j topped with fruit leather

strawberries, blueberries, pretzels, mini marshmallows, grapes, peanut butter sandwich

And in case you'd prefer to see them in a collage for easy inspiration...

a back to school party.

Post and giveaway sponsored by OshKosh B’gosh. All opinions are my own.  Thanks for reading!

Last weekend we hosted a little back to school party as part of my partnership with Oshkosh B'gosh.

The weather was absolutely perfect so I set up a craft/snack table for a few friends and the boys outside on our deck.

I limited myself one table...

With all the hustle and bustle of vacations and pre-season sports right before school started, I wanted to keep things as simple as possible!

Oshkosh B'gosh generously sent a box full of supplies and I shopped the house for the rest.

I'm always a little amazed by the party props I have on hand. ;)

The plan for the party was to let the moms chit chat while the littles got to color lunch bags and totes for themselves.

It worked out just right!
A great ending to all of our summers!

The boys colored for a bit, snacked for a bit, and then ran off their boyish energy in our backyard.

I'm learning as a mom/party host/human being in general to let go of some control.

Soccer wasn't on my itinerary for this party.

We were going to sit at my cute, thought-out craft table and color lunch bags and totes darn it.

We were going to color the cute Camp B'gosh coloring sheets.

Then we were going to snack on goldfish crackers and festive alphabet Rice Krispie treats and sip chocolate milk.

But the grass and the soccer goal was calling their name.

And parties are not about adhering to schedules and plans.
They're about letting littles be littles and letting them have fun.
So soccer it was. :)

And now...

The winner is you, Lisa!!
