recipe: homemade apple cider
My two youngest love going to Trader Joe's this time of year because of the apple cider samples.
This is the perfect diy homemade version.
Bonus: the house smells amazing.
Double bonus: neither one of them rams me in the ankles with those tiny red shopping carts.
You'll need:
1 dozen apples...I used a bag of McIntosh, but any apples/any combo of apples will do
1 orange
1 1/2 cups {yikes} brown sugar
4 cinnamon sticks
1 whole nutmeg
1 tbsp whole cloves
1 tsp whole allspice
Chop apples and orange into quarters.
Place fruit and all other ingredients in stock pot and cover with water, leaving a few inches at the top of the pot.
Bring to a boil and stir for an hour, then simmer for two more hours.
Mash all ingredients with a potato masher as you go and then strain through a cheesecloth into mason jars.
{ps. if you want to pin another recipe that will make your house smell delicious for later, here's how to make your house smell all Christmasy!}

Looks so good.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on an apple orchard and every year around this time we got out this huge old press and made apple juice / cider. I hated the work back then, but miss it now. I'm going to give this a try... I know the smell alone will bring back great memories!
That looks so nice - as well as your kitchen, lovely! :-)
