Black Friday
As much as I love our October tradition, I really love our post-Thanksgiving tradition.
My 3 year old and I have been waiting anxiously for weeks for today to arrive.
We had the nicest time chatting with the man running the tree lot. He was friendly and helpful and teased our boys about taking home a gigantic 12 foot tree. He shared with us that he'd been on this same spot of land for the past 20 years, and his father for almost 40 years before that.
His story, combined with seeing his modest residence of a trailer, reminded me of my respect and admiration for farmers. People who are completely dependent on things they can't control, like weather and the buying habits of people in a not so great economy. This man, like his father before him, spends six weeks of the year camped out here, alone, away from his family--the six weeks the rest of us most want to be with family. And he's pleasant, to boot.
Needless to say, we'll be visiting him again next year. :)
And in this-stuff-only-happens-to-me news: one of the tree stands I bought was missing parts, forcing me into Target on Black Friday for a replacement. (I'll admit it wasn't all that bad!)
Although the tree in the kitchen sink just might catch on. ;)
Enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!
That last picture is too funny!
ReplyDeleteOur family always went to a local tree farm, owned by my friend's parents, on Black Friday. It was such a beautiful place - hay ride, hot chocolate, beautiful handmade wreathes you could buy, cookies, etc. etc.
But now the tree farm is closed. :( And none of the others around compare to the one we grew up with! I'm bummed that I can't share that tradition with my little guy.
I love your last picture! That's a cute little tree :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet family tradition!!!!
ReplyDeletethe tree in the sink had me laughing. Hopefully you were able to get through the crowds at target and get a new stand.
ReplyDeleteWe would buy ours from a gentleman who would come down every year from the Upper Peninsula to sell. He to has been selling in that past for the past 20 some years.
Have you ever been to Andersons tree farm in Plainfield? We got ours from their last year. They take you out on a hayride type trailer right out to the trees and you get to cut it down yourself. Fun stuff and good times especially when it's snowing and 30 some degrees outside.
Ohhh I can't wait to get our tree! Looks like you got a good one.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog for over a year now, but I think this is my first time commenting on it! I just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading your blog. Thanks!
I love Christmas tree shopping.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I saved a picture of the sign. I love it. And I totally want to recreate it. {It would have been hard for me if I was there in person...I'd want to be a crazy lady who snuck in after it was dark to steal the sign}
P.S. I really wouldn't do that...just for the record.
I can't wait to start these kinds of traditions. My husband (of one year) and I live in an apartment and have a scrawny fake tree. I can't wait to take our kids to a tree farm and pick out the perfect evergreen!
ReplyDeleteAnd of course, the tree in the sink is hilarious!
