What's the rush?
Okay, I realize Christmas was over days ago. I know what the calendar says.
But why are we all rushing to have Christmas over so soon? What's so great about January?
During my recent blog hopping, I've seen too many posts about the joy of ripping down the Christmas decorations December 26th.
I've got to say I'm really not that happy when all the Christmas comes down.
I know I've said this all before. Back to school starts in July. Halloween starts in August. Christmas starts in October. Thanksgiving is completely ignored.
Why can't we just enjoy the moment?
So in our house, we're still Christmasing.
Our trees are still up and the lights are still lit.
We're still eating candy canes and cookies. And we're still wearing our jammies all day long.
We're squeezing every last drop of enjoyment out of this Christmas that we can.
And you know what? We couldn't be happier.

I'm all about enjoying the holidays. I hate the rush to finish one holiday and move onto the next. Hope you have a great rest of the year and enjoy each day to the fullest!

ReplyDeleteI've notice a huge movement in all of blogland for everyone to be in a big rush to yank down, stuff away, throw out all that remains of Christmas. I'm definitely up for starting to get some of the Christmas clutter away and under control, but c'mon, we're still within The Season - that is if one is a Christian. His birthday was just 3 days ago. Shouldn't we be celebrating a little longer than just 12 hours?
Oh well . . . to each his own, as they say.

i have my xmas tree and decorations till February :) But i decorate my tree on xmas eve :)
ReplyDeleteWe're still doing all of those things too. ;) The tree won't come down till this weekend. But my decor has been up since Thanksgiving week. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as you know. There's only one thing I like as much as Christmas decor, and that's a clean slate. It doesn't mean I don't savor and love the holiday any less than the next person. It's a personal preference -- some leave it up till February and if that makes them happy, I say go for it!

ReplyDeleteI agree! I love Christmas! This is my favorite time of year. Why do we wait all year for it and then rush to tear it down the day after its over? I'm with you. I still have my tree up, my house is still decked out with christmas lights, and the stockings are still up. Christmas is one of the sweetest months of the year. You throw caution and discipline to the wind. January means tightning the purse strings and trying to fit into your work clothes after you ate yourself into oblivion. Sorry, this was so long-winded. Nice post Cheryl.
ReplyDeleteI agree... usually we leave our tree up until mid-January. This year it's coming down a bit early for space issues. I'm planning to leave my nativities out though.... as well as a few other odds-n-ends. We do have a second smaller tree that will stay up for a while yet.... :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I could not agree more. All my friends spent Saturday taking down their decor, I was busy throwing a few more ornaments on the tree. Trdaitionally ours stays up until New Years. And since this year we have company until the 4 and travel out of the country on the 5, it's staying up until we come back from Hong Kong.

Thank you! My neighbor had the most lovely decorations and a beautiful tree...and the day after Christmas my mom finally came for a visit. We went on a special walk because I had to show Mom this house....and we were so sad that it was all taken down. Her husband happened to be walking up from another neighbor's house and he said he'd started taking it down at 8 a.m. that morning :(

ReplyDeleteWell said... I am still enjoying the "Christmas" season and my decorations through January... There isn't much else to look forward to in Ohio until it starts to get warm in the spring... :)

ReplyDeletemy hubby tore down our lights & stuff but mostly bc he has to go back to work & I can't reach a lot of it to take it down. My parents wanted to send our presents to us but I told them to keep them until we visit mid-January. I'll spread out Christmas!

I absolutely LOVE the idea that you are still Christmasing in your house. The truth is we each get to choose how we want to live this life, but some how we loose touch with that truth. Good for you! You're living life on your own terms. You celebrate as long and fully as you want!

ReplyDeleteNot 5 min. after Christmas was over, the stores started to shelve the Valentines stuff. Bleck!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. Not only is our Christmas tree still up - but our Thankful Tree is still up, too. (We just decided to hang our Christmas hats on it.)
Through January we plan to finish modge-podging our salt ornaments and maybe even create some new ones. Heck, I still a second ornament wreath that I want to complete.
So, in our house, it's firmly Christmas. And, once it's passed, it will still firmly be Winter.
I am giving you TWO THUMBS UP for this post. :) It feels so rushed...Halloween is barely over before stores (and some blogs) are showcasing Christmas and the second the last gift is unwrapped, it's all out the door. ;) I want my girls to enjoy everything for a few more days, so it will come down on New Years Day here. A fresh start! I'm ready for a clean slate (we do have a lot of decorations this year and it's starting to feel a little cluttered). Keeping the decorations up just a few days more helps me stay in the spirit. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this! We don't take our Christmas decor down until after January 6th (Epiphany). I just found out the other day that the 12 days of Christmas actually start on December 25th (I had always thought it was the 12 days leading up to Christmas). SOOO, that just gives me even more reason to leave those lights up a few more days!!
ReplyDeleteI completely understand what you are saying. They put out Valentine's before Christmas is even over. I don't like that. Just enjoy the holiday and the season. I will say that my personality is such that I like to do the tree the day after Thanksgiving but the day after Christmas, it has to come down. I just like my house to be 'normal' like it is everyday. I am with you though about enjoying the cookies and PJs all day long. I have been doing that the last few days. Have a great New Year.
ReplyDeleteWe're on the opposite end of things, we'll be Christmasing all through January. Our stuff usually stays up through then because it takes so much work to get it all up I like to enjoy it as long as decently possible. Plus staying in jammies and eating cookies always works for me:)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you! Growing up we waited until the New Year to take down the decor...and now that I'm married we wait until Jan 6th, Three Kings Day. Winter is awesome when you are waiting and anticipating Christmas with all the festivities and lights and happiness...once it's over it's dreary and cold. Let's petition to have Thanksgiving moved to the FIRST Thursday in November :)
